The nursery rhyme, “Pop Goes the Weasel”, actually refers to the act of having to pawn your suit after spending all your money in the pubs of Clerkenwell.
One version of the rhyme had the line “Up and down the City Road/In and out the Eagle/That’s the way the money goes/Pop goes the Weasel!”
Eight out of 10 adults count themselves as pub goers and more than 15 million people drink in a pub at least once a week.
There are approximately 54,000 pubs in the UK.
The use of animals as pubs names was introduced because at the time most of the country was illiterate. This resulted in pictures of swans, horses or dogs being used to mark houses where beer was brewed.
Also known as Peover Superior, the village of Over Peover is situated 5 miles south of the historic town of Knutsford in the county of Cheshire. This ancient parish is mentioned in the Domesday Book, the survey undertaken after the Norman Conquest, and dates back to Anglo Saxon times and before. The name Peover means Bright Stream or Shining Water and refers to The Peover Eye, the river which forms one of the parish boundaries. You can read more about the fascinating history of the village and Peover Hall in the book written by Barry Wienholdt and John Mottershead and published to commemorate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002.Today, Over Peover is a modern rural community in a peaceful and attractive countryside environment.

What a lovely spring we’ve had so far, with plenty of sunny days and lots of laughter in the beer garden it’s safe to say you are all embracing the English sunshine just like we should.
We have had such a busy April with the Grand National and Ladies Day, Easter Weekend which couldn’t go missed without an Easter Egg hunt of course and all of the walkers we’ve had popping by after their long Spring walks in the countryside…. Our weekends have never been busier.
With all this reminiscing on what happened in April, lets move onto what’s coming up in May – Our Country and Western Night is just around the corner on the 18th May which is only £20 a ticket and includes Tex-Mex food, Bourbon Cocktails, Beer and a DJ – Put your cowboy boots on and show us how to Two Step your way to the bar. Whilst we are on the theme of drinks our range of local ales is forever expanding… with our latest addition being ‘Spuirrel’s Jump’ by The Cheshire Brewhouse – This golden bitter ale is a light, dry and refreshing NZ Pale Ale with tropical and citrus in abundance, heavily hopped with four New Zealand hop varieties. It’s a new favourite at The Dog and we regularly update our guest ales so you can always try something new on every visit!
Don’t forget we do the best cooked breakfasts at The Dog and serve until 11am, 7 days a week, so whether you’re an early riser or like to have a lie in at the weekends you don’t need to miss out on our breakfast menu. Along with breakfast we also have brilliant facilities for weekday meetings or if you just want to sit in a corner and bring your office to us one day, we have all sorts of snacks, coffees and cool drinks available. Also for you ladies who lunch we have a great range of sharing platters, mains and sweet treats along with something for the little ones.
Our weekends have been so busy, especially over Easter so we would recommend booking if we are planning on visiting us on a Saturday or Sunday so that you don’t miss out on our ‘Cheshire famous’ roast dinners. We are proud to say our roast dinners are pretty darn good! So make sure you don’t miss out….
If you would like to go on one of our local walks please ask a member of staff, so that we can send you in the right direction. Walking through Over Peover and seeing all of the beautiful wildlife, especially now that all of the animals have hatched their babies, you may see the odd chick or two.
We hope to see you very soon.

Long week? Fancy some quality food without the hassle of cooking and cleaning? Stop by on a Friday and we’ll prepare some good ol’ fashioned fish & chips for you to take home! Delicious crispy batter, tender fish and golden chunky chips. Perfect.
Seeing as Easter has just passed, we thought we’d share this recipe for the perfect spring cocktail. However, the sun doesn’t need to be shining to enjoy this drink!
Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make a pitcher full of delicious strawberry and basil margarita:
12 to 14 strawberries
8 basil leaves
6-8 shots of tequila (add more if you fancy)
Limeade, or lemonade with a dash of lime cordial
Now follow these steps and get tasting:
Add a few cubes of ice to the pitcher.
Hull the strawberries, then slice them length ways and chuck ‘em in.
Crumple the basil a little in your hands (this will help release the flavour) and add to the mix.
Time for the tequila!
Fill the rest with your limeade, or lemonade with a dash of lime
Give the drink a quick stir and cover the jug with foil.
Pop the pitcher in the fridge and leave to chill overnight, or at least 4/5 hours.
When you return your pitcher will be a pale pink in colour, bursting with flavour and ready to drink!
